Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Head and Neck

Abstract
Authors reviewed 57 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck and analyzed the histologic and clinical features of these patients who had been treated at the Presbyterian Medical Center from January 1981 to December 1991.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The mean age was 51.8 years and peak incidence was 6th decade. The sex ratio (M: F) was 2:1.
2) The most frequent clinical manifestation was neck mass (30%) and sore throat was second (20.5%). Ten cases (17.5%) showed B symtpom.
3) The anatomical distribution was as follows: neck in 34 cases (37.0%); palatine tonsil 31 (34.1%); nasopharynx 9 (9.8%). Nodal to extranodal ratio was 1:1.7.
4) All specimens were histologically classified according to the Working Formulation and staged according to the Ann Arbor Classification. Diffuse large cell (cleaved or noncleaved) was 29 cases (50.9%), diffuse mixed (small and large) cell was
10(17.5%) and large cell immunoblastic type was 10 (17.5%).
5) Stage I was 38.6%; stage II, 54.4% ; stage III, 3.5%; stage IV, 3.5%.
6) In stage I, 5 cases were managed with radiotherapy, and 7 cases were managed with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In stage II, 10 cases were remedied by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. 3 cases of stage I and 1 case of stage II were treated with
radiotherapy and chemotherapy before and after surgery.
7) Treatment results after 3 ycars were as follows allve with no evidence of disease in 21 cases (47.7%), alive with local recurrence of lymphatic involvement in 9 cases (20.5%), expired in 14 cases (31.8%) and 13 cases were lost to follow up.
